The Story Behind Joy Drop
A few years ago, during my positive psychology coursework and the dark days of the COVID pandemic, Joy Drop was born. My daughters were feeling the heavy weight of isolation, and it was taking a toll on their well-being. One evening, we got in the car, headed to our favorite bakery, and purchased five loaves of cinnamon chip bread—a family favorite. We asked the shop owners to put them in gift bags with twirly pink ribbons, and we drove around town, knocking on my daughters' friends' doors and delivering our favorite treat. The impact on my daughter was immediate; I could see mood improve as clearly as watching a glass filling up with water —she felt connected and happier. Inspired by the positive effect this simple act had on her, we created Joy Drop, hoping to help others experience that same sense of connection and joy.
Why It Works
When we are other centered we are open to putting our own needs, desires and emotions to the side in order to focus and listen to others. When we focus on others and act on those thoughts with kindness we get a dose of oxytocin (the feel good hormone) which will leave you feeling connected, more generous, less stressed and happier.
The Steps
1. Choose a person to Joy Drop
2. Gather a note or small token to drop
3. Plan when and how you will spread the joy
4. Don’t forget to attach the Joy Drop card to encourage the recipient to pass on the JOY to someone else. If you run out email me at sara@corckrancoaching for more.
5. Notice how you feel.
